Hammam Faraun is one of those places.
Located on the western coast of South Sinai, approximately three hours from both Cairo International Airport and Sharm El Sheikh International Airport, Hammam Faraun possesses an extraordinary combination of geothermal springs, dramatic mountains, pristine coastline, consistent offshore winds, archaeological significance, and exceptional natural beauty.
This report is not about what should be built.
It is about what should never be lost.

Their mineral-rich composition has long attracted visitors seeking relief from rheumatic conditions, certain skin disorders, respiratory ailments, and musculoskeletal pain, forming the basis of Hammam Faraun’s long-standing reputation for therapeutic tourism.
Rather than creating an artificial wellness destination, Hammam Faraun already possesses one of nature’s most remarkable wellness resources.
4. The Geothermal Caves
Hidden within the mountain are two naturally formed karstic caves that make Hammam Faraun truly unique.
Unlike ordinary caves, these chambers are naturally heated by geothermal activity beneath the mountain. Warm sulfur-rich water and geothermal vapour rise through fractures in the rock, creating a naturally humid environment that has traditionally been used as a therapeutic steam bath.
Scientific studies identify these caves as an important component of the Hammam Faraun geothermal system and recognize them as valuable sites for balneotherapy, natural sauna therapy, geological research, and geotourism.
Inside the caves, mineral deposits and rock formations record thousands of years of geological activity, making them significant not only for wellness but also for their geological heritage.
These caves should be treated as protected natural assets.

The surrounding region formed part of the ancient mining and trade routes that connected the Nile Valley with Sinai’s turquoise mines and the nearby Temple of Hathor at Serabit el-Khadim during the New Kingdom, particularly under Pharaoh Amenhotep II. The site’s very name—“Pharaoh’s Bath”—reflects its long-standing association with ancient Egypt.
The landscape itself tells this story.
There is no need to imitate ancient Egypt through themed architecture or decorative replicas.
Authenticity should come from respecting the land, using natural materials, and allowing history to remain embedded in the landscape rather than recreated upon it.
11. Development Principles
The long-term value of Hammam Faraun will depend less on what is built and more on what is preserved.
Future planning should prioritize:
- Preserving natural wind corridors
- Protecting the geothermal springs
- Conserving the geothermal caves
- Respecting the natural mountain topography
- Limiting building heights
- Maintaining uninterrupted sea views
- Protecting marine habitats
- Preserving access to the shoreline
- Using local stone, earth tones, and natural materials

- Designing architecture that blends into the landscape rather than dominates it
Luxury should be measured by the quality of the natural experience—not by the scale of construction.
