Urban Ecology, Food Systems & Biophilic Design

Founder & CEO

Exploring how living systems can become part of the cities we inhabit.

VertiCairo is an urban ecology and design initiative exploring how plants, food systems and natural ecosystems can be integrated into buildings, public spaces and everyday urban life.

Our work brings together biophilic design, urban agriculture, aquaponics, environmental education and applied experimentation — from developing locally made growing systems to exploring how existing buildings and infrastructure can support more vegetation, biodiversity and productive green space.

Through projects such as Aura, Project Nile, educational programs and urban greening concepts, VertiCairo uses design, biology and technology to explore a simple question: how can we build cities that are greener, healthier and more connected to the natural systems that sustain us?

The Story

VertiCairo began with a simple idea: exploring better ways to grow food within the city.

What started with modern growing systems gradually developed into a broader exploration of how plants, food production and living ecosystems can become part of the built environment.

That journey led VertiCairo beyond food production and into aquaponics, urban agriculture, biophilic design, environmental education and urban greening — bringing together biology, design and technology to explore how cities can become greener, healthier and more connected to nature.

Today, VertiCairo develops and tests ideas at different scales — from small living systems and educational experiences to concepts for buildings and urban infrastructure — with a focus on solutions that can be adapted, built and maintained locally.

The Vision

We believe nature should be part of the city, not separate from it.

VertiCairo explores how plants, food production and living ecosystems can be integrated into the buildings, infrastructure and communities that shape our everyday lives.

Our vision is to create greener, healthier and more resilient urban environments — combining biophilic design, urban agriculture, aquaponics, education and locally developed solutions.

From reimagining existing buildings and infrastructure with living systems, to teaching students how ecosystems function, our work connects design, biology and technology to explore new ways for people and nature to coexist within the city.

What We Do

Urban Greening & Biophilic Design — Exploring how vegetation and living systems can be integrated into buildings, façades and urban infrastructure.

Urban Agriculture & Living Systems — Developing and testing locally appropriate systems for growing plants and integrating aquaculture, including Aura and our aquaponics work.

Education & Ecology — Hands-on programs connecting agriculture, ecology, biology, physics and environmental design, from ancient agricultural systems to the future of cities.

Research, Concepts & Demonstration Projects — Using projects such as Project Nile and the Cairo Ring Road concept to demonstrate how ecological thinking can influence the built environment.
